ACT Scores continue to rising, enrollment steady

The Human action scores among incoming freshmen at Southeastern keep to climb, a sign the university is attracting increasing numbers of highly prepared students, Southeastern officials announced today.

Average composite ACT scores for new freshmen reached 21.7, an increase over last year's 21.iv average. The score is above both country (20.one) and national (21.1) averages.

"On a 36-point scale, this is meaning," said Stephen Soutullo, assistant vice president for enrollment management. "It's an indication more and more highly prepared students are choosing Southeastern, which has been the focus of our recruitment strategies in contempo years."

Highly qualified students – those with Act composite scores of 24 and above – showed an increment of almost ten percentage, rise from 634 to a tape 696, co-ordinate to the university'southward official enrollment written report.

"The number one indicator of a student's potential success in college is his or her training in loftier school," said Southeastern President John L. Crain. "We're pleased to see that our incoming freshmen ACT scores take shown steady increases in recent years. "In fact, the number of continuing students increased significantly, almost 6 percentage, over last year, a clear indication our retention efforts are constructive in providing the support students demand to stay in school and make progress toward their degrees," stated Soutullo.

"The enrollment report shows increases in the number of students in all classifications except freshmen," he added. "Sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate student classifications increased from two percent among juniors to 3.half-dozen percent among seniors."

Crain said Southeastern'south enrollment profile shows a record number of students attending on the state's TOPS programme, 3974 students compared to terminal year three,795, a iv.7 percentage increase.

18 students vie for Miss Southeastern crown

For the first fourth dimension in Miss Southeastern history, eighteen students volition compete for the title. Jessica Poumaroux of Baton Rouge, Miss Southeastern 2009, will crown her successor in the annual Southeastern pageant, scheduled for Sept. 26, seven p.m., at the Pottle Music Edifice Auditorium. The pageant has been a part of Southeastern's history since 1949 and a Miss America preliminary since 1962. The pageant is sponsored by the Campus Activities Board. Full general access is $5 each night, free for Southeastern students, kinesthesia and staff.

The theme of the 2010 Pageant is "A Girl For All Seasons," said CAB Coordinator Jason Leader.

Leader said the pageant will once again feature the "People'southward Choice Honor" as a mode of collecting donations for the Miss America national platform, Children's Miracle Network.

"The contestant whose container has the most donations will win the People's Selection Award," Leader said. The donations will benefit the Children'south Phenomenon Network.

Kinesiology Department going yellow for Livestrong Day

The Department of Kinesiology and Health Studies will host and celebrate its first Livestrong Solar day Wednesday, October. 7, in support of cancer awareness and the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF).

Hosted by the Department of Kinesiology and Health Studies Club, faculty, Student Athletic Training Clan and the Sports Management Association, the celebration will feature a campus run/walk, performances by student organizations and a customs-broad "Wearing Yellow" competition.

"Nosotros have all been affected by cancer, so we feel strongly about supporting this effect," said Jennifer Jeansonne, assistant professor of kinesiology and health studies.

Students, faculty, staff and the community are encouraged to wear yellowish and participate in the campus run/walk starting at 6 p.yard. in Strawberry Stadium. Community children will participate in a half-mile run around the stadium rail followed past a one-three mile adult run/walk around the Southeastern campus.

During this time, student organizations will demonstrate fun practise habits by showcasing pace performances, trip the light fantastic routines and jump roping skills.

Partition of Administration and Finance Service Awards

The Partitioning of Administration and Finance held its Service Laurels Ceremony Sept. 14 in the Alumni Center. Vice President Stephen Smith recognized 30-nine segmentation employees who accept been employed at the University from five to 30-v years. Their combined service totals 490 years.

Faculty research results in male person health clinic on campus

After research conducted past Southeastern nursing faculty revealed the need and want for a clinic geared toward men, the university has opened a male person health dispensary.

Results of the study were published in the August regional edition of Advance for Nurses magazine, an industry publication for wellness intendance managers and providers.

The Comprehensive Public Training Program (CPTP), a section of the Louisiana Division of Assistants located in Billy Rouge, is offering a number of free professional person development programs on campus. Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum Partners with Smithsonian mag for Special Events

On Sept. 26, the Lake Pontchartrain Bowl Maritime Museum will partner with Smithsonian magazine for special events celebrating Smithsonian Museum Day. A celebration of civilisation, learning, and the dissemination of noesis, the fifth annual Smithsonian Museum Day reflects the spirit of the magazine, and emulates the free-admission policy of the Smithsonian Establishment's Washington, D.C.-based properties. The doors of the museum will be open gratuitous to all visitors on Saturday, Sept. 26, during regular hours, 10 a.m. to iv p.m.

"Smithsonian and the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum share the same mission, to brainwash and inspire," said Jay Martin, Maritime Museum executive director. "We are glad to offer unique events and activities of local interest this Museum Day."

At ten a.g. the museum will unveil the winners of the 2009 Children's Fine art Contest, including the grand prize winner whose design is featured on the new children'southward t-shirt. On Midweek, pianists Kenneth Boulton and JoAnne Barry will present a lecture recital entitled "American Music: In Melody with Our Times," Sept. 23 at 7:thirty p.g. in the Music Annex Recital Hall. The Center for Faculty Excellence announces 2009-10 Enhancement Grants

Grants for Teaching Enhancement

Proposals are limited to a maximum of $500. Funds are for the current fiscal year and must exist spent/burdened by March 15, 2010. Dorsum past popular need! The Centre for Kinesthesia Excellence is offering a Certificate for University Didactics and Learning on Form Portfolios!

Certificates of University Teaching and Learning (CUTL) are offered by the Center to assist you in meeting and documenting your professional person goals. This program allows faculty a structured, concentrated way to expand the do, art and scholarship of didactics and learning. These certificates may be included in your professional portfolio as evidence of your connected professional growth in your commitment for teaching excellence.

Why Form Portfolios? These portfolios will let y'all to explore what is actually going on in your classrooms. Is what you want to happen really happening? Teaching requires a lot of intellectual work! Why non make your piece of work visible through a course portfolio!

The Fall 2009 CUTL will allow participants to create a course portfolio over a series of four workshops led by Southeastern'southward Heather O'Connell, Department of English and Coordinator of the Middle's Institutes on Teaching and Professional Enhancement (ITPE).Heather has attended national training and has assisted numerous faculty in creating their own course portfolios. The workshops will divide the creation of the course portfolio into a iv-step procedure.To create a grade portfolio, participants will draw a particular form, get together evidence from the course, reflect on the educational activity and learning outcomes, and share portfolios.

For your convenience the workshops are offered at two different times during the week. You may attend one, two, iii, or iv sessions. Kinesthesia successfully completing all four steps volition receive a Document of University Teaching and Learning.

Blackboard Workshops

Southeastern has installed Blackboard 9 and is currently running a pilot. The entire campus volition exist moving to Blackboard 9 starting Jan. 2010. In preparation for the new application, faculty can obtain training from The Center for Faculty Excellence this semester in two ways.

1) Participation in a Certificate Plan OR

2) Attending an Overview of the interface and the Grade Center

Stride 1: Getting Started

"Getting Started with Blackboard nine" introduces you to the look and feel of the latest version of Southeastern's course management system. You volition see how the pupil sees a form in BB9. You will learn to exercise the minimal tasks necessary to teach with Blackboard ix, such every bit adding a syllabus, making announcements, adding tools to form content, sending messages to students, and creating a grade bill of fare.

The workshop will introduce participants to create, edit, deploy and manage tests and assignments. Blackboard 9 allows faculty to easily alternate between student and teacher "views". The workshop will discuss the usefulness of this characteristic in creating various assessment tools and seamlessly integrating them with the course content.

Come larn about e-mail communication, the message lath, word board, blogs and journals and how to collect, review and grade those applications where grading is bachelor.

This workshop is essential for those education online and will introduce kinesthesia to the Grade Center, the Operation Dashboard, the Reports, and the Early Warning Organisation
